SuperScan by Foundstone is a fast and powerful scanner for TCP ports.

SuperScan is port scanning software that in its heyday had the reputation for being the fastest port scanning solution available. The software is freeware, closed-source, Windows-only and developed by Foundstone. The speed and efficiency of this program would eventually motivate McAfee to acquire Foundstone, and McAfee did host and maintain SuperScan for a time.

Among the most powerful aspects of SuperScan beyond the speed at which it scans and identifies is that it does not require installation. This means that you can have it on a USB flash drive or other portable storage solution and run it at any supported workstation you are currently at.

SuperScan scans both TCP and UDP ports on a target computer in order to identify open ports. In addition to a single target computer, you can see SuperScan with an IP range and have it enumerate the IP addresses and scan for open ports on all them. The UI is a bit clinical and busy, but it packs a lot of information and configuration onto a single display that requires no nested windows.

SuperScan also includes additional networking tools, and these are all accessed from this single window as well. These tools include HTTP HEAD, ICMP traceroute, ping and whois. The latest version also features windows enumeration and can provide a lot of information relevant to Microsoft Windows. This information includes, NetBIOS, network shares, trusted domains and user and group accounts.

An issue with SuperScan is that it is not really maintained any longer. The final release occurred in 2004. A perhaps bigger issue is that networking has changed and use of this program may no longer be practical except in some very specific cases. The final release works with Windows 95, 98/98SE, ME, XP, Vista, 7 and 8/8.1. Although Windows 10 support is not advertised, since there were not specific updates for 7 and 8, it stands to reason 10 will work as well—in computability mode at least if nothing else.
